I can't even remember the last game to inspire the feeling of "My God, I can't put it the fuck down so I can eat/sleep/bathe" that used to be a pretty normal thing, and I'm not sure if that's just the way games are made now, or that's just adulthood being a stodgy asshole. Regardless, whatever elements are required to bring that about, Mario Kart 8 has it. The tracks are a miracle of great level design, the new powerups are balanced, and yet all of them are fun to lob at whoever dares to run past. The players have so much more character and life than they have in games prior, and yes, that includes Luigi's newfound had-enough-of-your-shit spiteglare. The online, without having heavy breathing 12 year olds yelling in your ear every second, has been nothing but fun, chaotic death races since day one. Even coming in last has me laughing about things. Compare that with Mario Kart Wii, which had courses that were just digital sadism set to motion controls.
Ironically, I think Mario Kart 8 might have done more to sell me on the idea of sharing gameplay as such a powerful marketing tool more than Sony's been able to do, and they went so far as to have a dedicated button on the controller for just that thing. Nintendo needed the help more, though, so the fact that it's mostly come down to a few tech-minded folks sharing the best moments from their game, set to whatever appropriate song they want, and grabbing millions upon millions of eyes to get folks interested in the WiiU is fine by me. Because, in case you haven't noticed, it's finally worth your money.
Either way, I'm on the 150cc cup, there's still 5 characters left to unlock, and I just found out Waluigi has a car/wheel combo that enables him to just ruin everyone's fucking day, so, that game's not leaving my WiiU anytime soon.
